Conjugaison de Devoir

Devoir is a very important verb in French.  It is equivalent to the English helper verb “must” (and in some instances, to have to).

It can, however, express several distinct nuances:

1)      To owe (both material and intangible): Tu me dois 50 euros. / You owe me 50 euros; Il vous doit sa vie. / He owes you his life.

2)      Proper: En due forme / In proper form; En due date / In due date (time)

3)      Obligation (normative, e.g law, custom, honor, moral, religion, ethical consideration): Vous devez respectez les lois de la route. /  You must respect traffic laws.

4)      Necessity (external): Je dois arriver à l’heure pour ne pas rater mon bus. /  I must arrive on time to catch my bus.

When used as a helper verb  (devoir + infinitive of verb =  must + (verb)),  it expresses probability:

Example: Il doit passer cet aprés-midi. /He must come by this afternoon.

Note that depending on the tone of voice, the above sentence can express two entirely different meanings, obligation or possibility.

Example: Je dois rendre le livre en temps voulu / I must give back the book on time

Examples:

#  Présent:  Je dois manger du poisson. / I must eat fish.

#  Imparfait:  Elle devait partir au travail tôt le matin. / She had to leave for work early in the morning.

#  Passé simple:  Nous dûmes passer la nuit à la gare. / We had to spend the night at the train station.

#  Futur Simple:  Ils devront partir se battre en Iraq. / They will have to go fight in Irak.

#  Passé Composé:  Tu a dû montrer ta carte d’identité. / You had to show your identity card.

#  Plus que Parfait:  Vous aviez dû partager le reste du repas. / You had had to share the rest of the meal.

#  Passé Antérieur:  Elle eut dû payer d’avance. /  She had had to pay in advance.

#  Futur Antérieur:  Vous aurez dû remplir le reservoir avant de partir en vacance. / You will have had to fill up the tank before going on vacation.

#  Présent du Subjonctif: Que vous deviez éviter l’affrontement semble évident. / That you have to avoid fighting seems evident.

#  Imparfait du Subjonctif:  Bien qu’il nous dût de l’argent, il est parti en croisière. / Even though he owed us money, he went on a cruise.

#  Passé du Subjonctif: Nul doute qu’ils aient dû se tromper de route. / No one doubts that they must have taken the wrong road.

#  Plus que Parfait du Subjonctif:  Que nous eussions dû mieux nous préparer fut vite évident. / That we should have prepared better became quickly evident.

#  Conditionel: Si j’avais gagné le lotto, je devrais payer des impôts. / If I had won the lottery, I would have to pay taxes.

#  Impératif:  Dois du respect! / Owe respect!

#  Infinitif: Devoir se taire quand on connait la réponse est difficile. / To have to keep quiet when one knows the answer is difficult.
Participe présent: Devant me réveiller tôt, j’ai réglé l’alarme. / Having to wake up early, I set the alarm.

#  Participe passé: Nous avons dû économiser. / We have had to save.
