Conjugaison de Faire

Faire is a very important verb in French.  It is equivalent to the English helper verb “to make.” Faire expresses several different nuances:

1)      To  create (physical object): Faire à manger / To prepare something to eat

2)      To design, to create an immaterial object: Faire son testament / To make one’s will

3)      To perform/to execute/to conduct an operation: Faire de la planche à voile / To windsurf

4)      To arrange/to clean up: Fais ta chambre! / Clean up you room!

5)      To accumulate: Je veux faire des réserves de bois avant l’hiver. / I want to make reserves of wood before winter.

6)      Causality: Cela m’a fait plaisir. / It made me happy.

When used as a helper verb, the construction is as follows:  faire + infinitive = to make + verb

Example: Je fais manger mes amis. / I make my friends eat. (I serve them something to eat.)

When not used as a helper verb, it is used as any other verb.

Example: Nous faisons des crèpes. /  We make pancakes.

#  Présent:  Je fais à manger. / I make something to eat.

#  Imparfait:  Elle faisait repeindre son appartement. / She had her apartment repainted.

#  Passé simple:  Nous fîmes brûler les bûches. / We made the logs burn.

#  Futur Simple:  Ils feront paître les vaches. / They will make the cows graze.

#  Passé Composé:  Tu a fait sauter les plombs / You overloaded the breakers.

# Plus que Parfait:  Vous aviez fait construire un mur / You had had a wall built.

# Passé Antérieur:  Elle eut fait cuire une tarte aux pommes / She would have baked an apple pie.

#  Futur Antérieur:  Vous aurez fait coudre la robe avant d’aller au bal. / You will have had the dress sewn up before going to the ball.

# Présent du Subjonctif: Il faut que je fasse nettoyer mon jardin. / I must have my garden cleaned.

# Imparfait du Subjonctif:  Bien qu’il fît trop chaud, nous partîmes quand même à la plage. / Even though it was too hot, we still went to the beach.

# Passé du Subjonctif: Quoi qu’ils aient fait beaucoup d’erreurs, ils ont quand même réussi. / Even though they made many mistakes, they still succeeded.

# Plus que Parfait du Subjonctif:  Que nous eussions mieux fait d’engager un autre guide fut prouvé une fois que nous nous fumes perdus. / That we should have hired a better guide was proven once we got lost.

# Conditionel: Si je gagne le loto, je ferais construire une piscine. / If I win the lottery, I could have a pool built.

# Infinitif: Faire parler les curieux. / To make busybodies talk.
# Participe présent: En faisant bien bouillir le lait, on tue les microbes. / By boiling milk well, one kills all the germs.

# Participe passé: Nous avons fait écrire une annonce. / We had an ad written.
