Conjugaison de Pouvoir

Pouvoir is a very important verb in French.  It is equivalent to the English helper verb “can” and is also used in a similar fashion to the verbal construction “to be able to.”  Pouvoir expresses several different nuances:

1)      Capacity: Il peut compter jusquà 100. / He can count to 100.

2)      Physical possibility: La neige peut tomber en Décembre. / Snow can fall in December.

3)      Permission: Nous pouvons nous garer ici. / We can park here.

4)      Choice: Si tu veux, tu peux partir plus tôt. / If you want, you can leave earlier.

5)      Eventuality: On peut voir des étoiles filantes en été. / One can see shooting stars during the summer.

When using pouvoir as a semi-auxiliaire, the construction is as follows:  pouvoir + infinitive = can/to be able to + infinitive

Example: Je peux nager cinquante mètres. / I can swim fifty meters.

#  Présent:  Je peus te voir. / I can see you.

#  Imparfait:  Elle pouvait partir au travail tôt le matin. / She could leave for work early in the morning.

#  Passé simple:  Nous pûmes acheter la maison à crédit. / We were able to buy the house on credit.

#  Futur Simple:  Ils pourront gagner le match. / They will be able to win the match.

#  Passé Composé:  Tu a pu vendre ta moto. / You were able to sell your motorcycle.

#  Plus que Parfait:  Vous aviez pu éteindre le feu. / You had been able to extinguish the fire.

#  Passé Antérieur:  Elle eut pu s’acheter un ticket. / She could have been able to buy herself a ticket.

#  Futur Antérieur:  Vous aurez pu manger avant de lever le camp. / You will have been able to eat before breaking camp.

#  Présent du Subjonctif: Il faut que je puisse l’appeler pour l’avertir / I must be able to call him to warn him.

#  Imparfait du Subjonctif:  Bien qu’il pût nous contacter pour s’excuser, il décida de ne pas le faire. / Even though he could have contacted us to apologize, he decided not to do it.

#  Passé du Subjonctif: Je ne pense pas qu’ils aient pu se tromper de route. / I don’t think that they could have taken the wrong road.

#  Plus que Parfait du Subjonctif:  Que nous eussions pu mieux nous préparer fut vite évident. / That we could have prepared better became quickly evident.

#  Conditionel: Si je gagnais le loto, je pourrais m’acheter un château. / If I won the lottery, I could buy myself a castle.

#  Infinitif: Pouvoir se faire de l’argent. / Being able to make money.

#  Participe présent:  En pouvant travailler, on peut réussir. / By being able to work, one can succeed.

#  Participe passé: Nous avons pu aller au concert. / We were able to go to the concert.
