What is the Sequence of Tenses?

It is the necessary agreement between the tense of the French verb in the main clause and the tense of the French verb in the subordinate clause, according to the chronology of the events/facts described.

Subordinate clauses are recognizable by the fact that they are introduced by a limited number of words:

subordinating conjunctions (e.g. que, quand, comme, puisque, lorsque, si, quoique)

and

relative pronouns (e.g. qui, que, quoi, dont, où, lequel or one of its variants: laquelle, lesquel(le)s, duquel, de laquelle, desquel(le)s, auquel, à laquelle, auxquel(le)s).

Subordinate clauses express a fact or event that may occur: before, simultaneously or after the facts or events of the main clause.

Why it matters? This is best illustrated with an example.

It is correct to say: Demain, tu auras oublié (future) ce qui t'as fait pleuré (past) ce soir / Tomorrow, you will have forgotten what made you cry tonight.

The following, however, is meaningless: Demain, tu as oublié (past) ce qui te feras pleurer (future) ce soir / Tomorrow, you have forgotten what will make you cry tonight.

The Table below should help you to keep track of the resulting tense agreements in French.
